As a dissertation coach, what do you do?
I usher you through every step of the dissertation journey—including selecting/refining your topic, developing a review of the literature, crafting clear research questions, developing your methodology, collecting/analyzing data, and guiding you through the drafting process. I show you exactly what to do at every stage of the process.
When should I work with a dissertation coach?
As soon as possible. You wouldn’t hire a building contractor after you’ve tried to build a custom home by yourself, right? Expert guidance at the beginning of your project is essential. It can save you countless hours of wasted time. This is because I can show you exactly how to approach each task before you do it. I call this “leading from the front,” and it is without question the most efficient way to make progress.
How is coaching different from editing?
Editing takes place at the end of the writing process and corrects problems. On the other hand, coaching takes place at the beginning of the process and prevents problems. The difference is crucial. Ultimately, if a project is poorly conceptualized and constructed, no amount of “editing” can fix it. Of course, I will edit your project as we construct each section so that you’re always producing polished, scholarly prose.
Can you help me choose or refine my topic?
Absolutely. I can help you select a topic that aligns with your interests, your program requirements, and your chair’s expectations. Working together, we’ll develop and refine your topic into a viable proposal/study that’s well-grounded in the research literature and ready to move forward.
Do you work with doctoral candidates in my field?
I work with doctoral candidates in a variety of fields—mostly in the social sciences. While it can be an advantage, it's not necessary for me to be a content expert in your discipline to help you identify, develop, and apply an appropriate research design. While some disciplinary differences do exist, the research process is often quite consistent across disciplines.
What stage of the dissertation can I get help with?
Although it’s best if we work together from the beginning, I’m happy to work with you at any stage of the dissertation process. Many doctoral candidates seek help only after they’ve become “stuck” somewhere in the dissertation process. That’s not a problem. I will meet you exactly where you are, and we’ll move forward from there.
Do you provide coaching for qualitative as well as quantitative projects?
Absolutely. This is one of the most important decisions you’ll make, and I’m equipped to lead you in either direction.
How often do we meet?
It depends on the stage of the project we’re currently working through. Typically, the more complex or detailed the task, the more frequently we’ll want to meet. Our meeting schedule likely will vary a bit, but we’ll always establish a timetable that works for you.
What about pricing?
My rate is simple: $85 per hour, with no contracts or complicated terms. I’ll send you an invoice at the end of each month. You can pay using PayPal, check, credit card, or Zelle. We’ll always work within your budget, and you’ll always know exactly where you stand.
