Let’s Talk
Our first task is getting to know each other. So let's start by discussing your project. If you haven’t decided on a topic, that’s okay. I’ll help you. We’ll start right where you are.
-
What excites you?
-
What’s holding you back?
-
What have you written (or haven’t written)?
-
Where do you feel stuck?
If you’ve got a rough draft, I’d love to take a look. Or, if all you have are thoughts swirling in your head, that’s okay too. We’ll go at your pace.
I’ll listen carefully, ask good questions, and together we’ll begin to map our way forward.
Making Progress
The dissertation is not a linear process. It consists of a lot of intricate moving parts that all require precision and alignment. It’s my job to keep them coordinated and progressing forward. In the same way that a general building contractor knows when to pour the foundation, frame the house, schedule the plumbing, and install the flooring, I’ll help you keep all the parts of the dissertation coordinated and on schedule. As we meet together and develop a working rhythm that’s comfortable for you, we’ll generally engage in three recursive processes.
-
Informing and Explaining (me)
-
Applying and Practicing (you)
-
Checking and Reviewing (me and you)
Informing and Explaining
Before we begin each section in every chapter, I’ll help you understand the nature and requirements of that particular section (e.g., background, problem statement, purpose statement, etc.). This way, you’ll develop a clear and accurate understanding of the function, role, and purpose of every section before you begin. Then, I’ll show you strategies, techniques, and heuristics I’ve designed and developed so you’ll know exactly how to create each section.
Applying and Practicing
Once you understand the nature and requirements of each section and I’ve demonstrated techniques to help you create it, you’ll simply apply and practice the methods I’ve shown you as we work together to build your project. Don’t worry—we’ll break down each task into very manageable tasks, and I’ll be right there with you every step of the way. You’ll never feel abandoned, deserted, or inadequate.
Checking and Reviewing
As you apply and practice the skills, strategies, and techniques I’ll show you, I’ll check and review your work. I’ll edit your draft and provide conceptual feedback to help you improve your skills. Then, when we meet, we’ll address any potential issues, challenges, or problems. This not only will ensure that your project is moving forward, but it also will ensure that you’re learning valuable skills as an academic researcher and scholar.

Moving Forward
It’s easy to measure “progress” by page count, but 20 pages written in the wrong direction isn’t really progress.
It’s a detour.
When it comes to the dissertation, detours can easily derail your progress, turning what should be a steady journey into a maze of distractions and setbacks. Real achievement is about quality, not quantity. It’s about ensuring that every chapter, every section, every paragraph meets expectations.
That’s where I come in.
I’ll help you understand not only what to do but also exactly how to do it:
-
Crafting a clear and compelling problem statement and purpose statement.
-
Constructing a comprehensive review of literature.
-
Developing appropriate research questions.
-
Aligning your problem, purpose, research questions, and methodology.
-
Choosing an appropriate theoretical framework.
-
Developing a clear research design.
-
Ensuring proper documentation, formatting, and citing.
-
Successfully passing your proposal defense.
-
Gaining IRB approval.
-
Collecting and analyzing data (qualitative and quantitative).
-
Submitting final chapters that meet academic standards.
-
Reaching the final defense prepared and confident.
-
Submitting your final, approved dissertation to ProQuest.
When it comes to the dissertation, progress isn’t measured just by getting the job done—it’s measured by getting the job done right. And that’s exactly what I’ll show you how to do—sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph, chapter by chapter. I’ll be right there with you every step of the way.
